What is palm oil and how does it affect our health

Palm is made from the seeds of a tree called Elaeis guineensis, an oil palm fruit tree. Palm oil has no specific smell or fragrance which makes it suitable for foods and non food products both. Palm oil is commonly used in food products such as breads and bakery products.

Side effects of palm oil

One of the main side effects of palm oil is, it contains a high quantity of saturated fat which is very bad for human health and risks of causing heart problems increase such as heart attack and chronic vascular diseases.

As palm oil is a type of fat and fat is high in energy dense such as calories. And constant use of any type of fat causes obesity and obesity gives birth to other chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, high blood pressure, heart problems etc. Palm oil not only causes obesity but it also affects the kidney and liver due to high levels of saturated fat.

It is commonly noticed that the food products containing palm oil are digested faster than other food products. This is also a type of side effect only in the human body because it disturbs the digestive system and it becomes difficult for our body to digest other food products which are made without palm oil.

Alternative to palm oil

If I talk about the best alternative for palm oil then the answer is a bit tricky. Because there’s no particular oil that can provide you all the benefits you need from oil or oil with no side effects. Our body needs the correct/ particular amount of saturated and unsaturated fats both, mono unsaturated fatty acid (myufa) and polyunsaturated fatty acid (pyufa).

But these both are not present in any type of oil at a time. For consumption of both you need to change the oils after a period of time, continuous use of single oil is considered to be dangerous to the health.

Any oil your using must have correct composition of omega 3 and omega 6 faty acid. But as we said there’s no oil having all these properties included so it’s important to keep on changing oils after the period of time. Change in oils will fulfill the basic needs of saturated and unsaturated fats in body.

How is palm oil used?

Palm oil is used in both food products and non food products.
